Everything you need to know about Construction Sands
Sand is one of the most crucial building materials. Choosing the right kind of sand can either make or break your building, quite literally! Sand is made from breaking rocks into fine particles. The diameter of a grain of sand ranges from 0.06 mm to 2.0 mm in size. Sand is used in many ways. It can be sued for landscaping. It can also be used to make glass and moulding material. It provides strength to any structure. It is important to choose the right kind of sand for your construction projects.
Sand is classified into majorly 3 types:
Concrete Sand
Concrete sand is a specific type of sand used as an aggregate in concrete mixtures. Since the surface of concrete sand is coarse, it bonds easier with water, cement, and other aggregates to create strong and durable concrete products. Concrete sand should not have more than 4% silt ideally. Silt is granular material of a size between sand and clay. The fineness modulus of concrete sand is between 2.5 to 3.5.
Plastering Sand
Plastering sand is used for plaster purposes. The fineness modulus of plaster sand should not be more than 1.5 ideally and it should not contain more than 4% silt. Plaster Sand is used with cement, and sometimes lime, to make mortar for masonry work and plaster. It is commonly used in concrete mixes for mortar or stucco and in concrete speciality products such as roofing tile or blended with rock dust for horse tracks and stalls.
Brick Sand
As the name suggests, brick sand is used for making bricks. The fineness modulus of brick sand should be between 1.2 to 1.5 and it should not be more than 4% silt ideally.
These were the classifications of sand based on the types of usage. Sands can also be classified according to their grain size.
Very Fine Sand The grain size of this sand is between 0.0625 mm to 0.125 mm
Fine Sand The grain size of this type of sand is between 0.125mm to 0.25mm
Medium Sand Sand between 0.25mm to 0.50mm grain size is called medium sand.
Coarse Sand The grain size of this sand is between 0.50mm to 1.0mm.
Very Coarse Sand When the grain size of sand is between 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm. it is very coarse sand.
Apart from these, there are also other types of sands available in the market for construction work.
River Sand
River Sand or Bajri, refers to the loose, fragmented, and naturally occurring material consisting of very tiny particles of decomposed shells, corals, or rocks. River sand is usually collected from river banks and is has a fine nature. It is mostly used for plastering.
Pit Sand
Pit sand is a natural and coarse type of sand that is extracted by digging 2-3m underneath the ground. It’s in red-orange colour due to the presence of iron oxide around the grains. These sand grains are free from salts; hence it doesn’t react with the moisture content present in the atmosphere. It is colloquially referred to as Badarpur in the common language. It is mostly employed in concreting.
M – Sand
Manufactured Sand or Robo Sand, refers to rocks, mine tailings or industrial waste granules with a particle size of less than 4.75 mm. It is processed by mechanical crushing and sieving. It is also known as M-Sand. It is used as a substitute for river sand. M-sand is gaining popularity in the construction industry because of its customisable nature. The particle shape, consistent gradation and fineness can be altered according to the usage. One of the biggest reasons for the construction industry preferring M-sand is that the sand has almost zero impurities. Availability of river sand and the unforeseen fluctuations in cost have led to M-sand being on the top of the list for construction industries.
M Sand Prices:
Sand prices varies from region to region. On an average M Sand prices range from Rs. 850 – 1000 per ton. River Sand costs from Rs. 1500 – 1800 per ton. Apart from this Cost, there will be transportation cost based on the location of the delivery.
There has been a paradigm shift in the construction business. With newer alternatives available and customisation options open for all, manufacturing artificial sand seems like an easier and smarter way to move forward.
